Synopsis

Live in Saeng begins with the awakening of a maiden in the heavens. The saenghwang, an instrument that links the past and present, is reborn through a motif of traditional Korean music that's given modern sensibility by blending it with a diverse range of instruments, resulting in a unique performance with a mythological backdrop. Live in Saeng reinterprets pieces that KIM Hyoyoung has performed in the National Gugak Center's Friday Gonggam Concert series, focusing mainly on Kim's compositions and improvisations as well as pieces from PARK, Gyeong-hun. The performance has received favorable reviews from Korean Cultural Centres in Shanghai, Paris, and Spain, and will be the opening performance for a Korean music festival in Germany this upcoming September. The piece will also be featured at the Hongcheon Marisori Festival in August, and at the Jeonju International Sori Festival and the Bukchon Nak-Rak concert in October.

Review

Gozu-Neok features original compositions that fully express Kim's rare technical prowess with the saenghwang. Incorporating free-flowing techniques that intertwine with dramatic inflections, it's a piece of artistic mastery that exhibits the lure of the saenghwang's musical essence. Saeng-improvisation utilizes improvisational techniques to blend themes of creation and extinction. In Shinsinawi, the saenghwang's 37 pipes flow in a slow tempo to join with the hwimori rhythms of the neighboring gayageum to form a marvelous technical intricacy. Kim's recent strides in her career have cemented her unique voice in the world of saenghwang music. (Gugak Critic HYEON, Gyeong-chae, review of Kim's 2013 short film Her Story, January 2014 issue of Theater & I)
